What IS the Business with STEM?

The Message. The Purpose. The Why.

The journey in writing “What’s the Business with STEM?” awakened my passion for diversifying the STEM pipeline, and the data further accentuated the financial benefits of working in the profession.

What's the Business with STEM? Now Available

For Black and brown communities, a career in STEM will positively impact underemployment and unemployment presenting financial opportunities that improve lifestyles, both socially and economically. In a society where lower income levels make decisions on your behalf, more earnings creates room for you to decide.

I learned while writing “What’s the Business with STEM?” and through its extensive research, the Black-White wealth gap is a real thing! Though the historical impact of this wealth gap has significantly affected diverse communities, it is possible to reduce this gap by building awareness and designing a roadmap for change.

I too learned through my research that sound Entrepreneurship in the United States has built wealth and legacy businesses. Hence my book titled, “What’s the Business with STEM?” So, why not marry STEM and Entrepreneurship? I’ll refer to this duo as the powerful twins, of which a career in STEM on average yields a $95,000 income, and Entrepreneurship and small business adds $1 trillion to the U.S. economy.

So what is the message?

There are multiple messages in “What’s the Business with STEM?” Let’s begin with the current representation in the STEM profession; 29% women and 6% Black and 7% Hispanic. Poor diversity impacts research of ethnic-based illness. Poor representation lacks diversity of thought. Historically, in the science community, mistrust from Black and brown communities is a result of anemic representation. Two targeted instances are the Tuskegee Experiment and the Henrietta Lacks case, where in both occurrences white researchers damaged the trust of Black and brown communities.

So the message is: Diversity matters and is critical to the future movement of STEM.

Another message in “What’s the Business with STEM?” is the impact sound Entrepreneurship will have on Black and brown communities, especially since Black and brown-owned businesses usually hire folk who look like them. The powerful twins; STEM and Entrepreneurship for the Black and brown community, and women, are positioned to change the landscape of wealth. Change the landscape of legacy businesses which positions families for generational wealth.

Who is the message intended for?

Calling all K12 and collegiate STEM educators to lean in and learn how “What’s the Business with STEM?” recommends adjusting curriculum in science, technology, engineering, and math to ADD Entrepreneurship education. The curricula amendment is a call to action designed to influence STEM diversity, increase innovation and patents, and increase the number of Black and brown-owned engineering, technology, and science firms. The book outlines curriculum for K12 and higher education classrooms, paired with project-based lessons applying real-world scenarios in STEM industries. The successful implementation of Entrepreneurship in STEM education hinges on buy-in from STEM educators, administrators, college presidents, and superintendents. This village of educators has the power to influence Black, brown, and female learners to represent in our STEM and Entrepreneurship ecosystem.

The message is intended for STEM educators and classroom influencers!

Let's further the discussion

The journey to “What’s the Business with STEM?” produced a literary discussion about the positive future impact STEM Entrepreneurship will have on Black, brown, and female communities. What is your influence?
