Suburban Balance Youth Entrepreneurship Summit Recap

Empowering Young Minds & Inspiring the Next Generation

Dr. Kamela Joy Goodwyn journeyed to Kansas City, MO in October and led discussions with youth members of Suburban Balance about entrepreneurship. The interactive workshop, “Are you an Entrepreneur?” defined entrepreneurship, walked participants through characteristics of an entrepreneur and differentiated between a product and a service.

Close to 125 youth participants acquired the skill to idealize a product from conception to goal through patent protection or copywrite. Similarly, youth became proficient about monetizing services and how to convert those services to business ventures. Next, a walk through of the how-tos of creating a sales pitch, the significance of marketing and the cruciality of fiscal responsibility, honed in on the keys to entrepreneurship longevity. During the facilitated workshop, Kamela Joy provided the elements of an effective sales pitch and showed an episode of the show Shark Tank as a visual. Next, participants created individual sales pitches and verbally shared them with the audience. A few brave souls described their current business ventures and others shared dreams of future entrepreneurial plans. At the conclusion of the workshop, youth entrepreneurs received local resources to aid in business planning, financing a new venture and understanding next steps to business ownership.
